Day 11

Tonights blog definitely has more news!

Yesterday evening was spent in Kenai at the EAA pilots club meeting. Jack says it was allot of fun and well worth the trip!

Jack was asked to talk about last years trip circumnavigating Canada. He has done several presentations about his trip and this time he used last years blog (see Jack's Adventures) to go over it as he did not have the formal one with him.

What an great bunch of pilots and what allot of adventures they have had.  Jack enjoyed the evening very much.

Thanks Fight Captains for a great evening!

Jack asked them to circle some of the must see places, notice no one circled the high north.

It had been Jack's plan to go up the west coast to the northern most tip of Alaska but as one of them said,  "You have been to northern Canada, not much different"

Jack took their advice and spent the day investigating the Kenai Fijords

Planes are a necessity up here.

1947 Curtis
They keep this 1947 Curtis running as it is used to deliver supplies and fuel to the remote communities. It is a workhorse able to land on short challenging runways.

Cessna 185

This Cessna 185 has the kind of tires Jack is dreaming about! Tom had invited Jack to the EAA meeting and shared allot of interesting info with Jack.

DE Havilland Beaver DHC-2 MK.1
Tom uses this Beaver to teach civil air patrol/airforce cadets training.

This little community of Seldovia  is accessed by water  and air only. Very quaint with stilt houses.

Fall Colors

Jack landed in Homer, you can see it on the map.

He saw lots of grey whales, local color in the valleys and artists work that makes the owl look real.

Jack really  wanted to get up to see the Harding Ice Field but the weather was a bit ify.  He makes mention of the wind speed of 60 mi hr with gusts. Needless to say it gave him and the planes contents a bit of a toss around.  He said he was glad he had his seat belt and shoulder harness on....that bad ehh!! He got to see a bit of  the glacier but could not get to the top. He had to head back to Kenai.

Another night in Kenai and probably a day off from flying tomorrow as a weather system has moved in. He says that will be OK as Kenai is an interesting place. Time to do some surface sight seeing.
